Who can adopt?

All sorts of people can adopt.

You can be

  • Single, living with someone, married or divorced.
  • White, Black, Asian, of mixed heritage or in a mixed relationship - we welcome people from all cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Lesbian, gay or straight.
  • In or out of employment.
  • With or without children.
  • A tenant or a homeowner.
  • Over 40!

You do need to have the energy to support a child throughout their life and beyond.

You do not need to have a lot of money. When you adopt a child the social worker will look at whether you need help and support to make the adoption successful. This can include regular financial payments, help with legal costs or providing furniture or specialist equipment if the child has special needs.

What ever your circumstances do not rule your self out as a potential adoptive parent, as all applications are looked at individually. Nationally 94% of people who apply are accepted for adoption. Everyone has individual concerns and you will be able to discuss these confidentially with an adoption social worker when you make your enquiry.
